Passage: 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Series: Walking in the Way of Blessing Title: “The Blessedness of God” I. The blessedness of God - “…he who is the blessed…” (6:15a) The only Sovereign (15b) - independent, underived authority The King of kings (15c) The Lord of lords (15d) Alone has immortality - never dies; eternal; able to give life (16a) Dwells in unapproachable light - holy, pure, transcendent (16b) Unseeable - blindingly glorious (16c) Worthy of all honor and eternal dominion - qualified to rule (16d)  God’s blessedness [makarios] = “the perfect union of all good things” God’s glory = the shining forth of the unified perfections of God II. The charge (6:11-14) Flee evil and false doctrine (11a) Pursue that which aligns with sound doctrine (11b) Fight the good fight of faith (12a) Take hold of eternal life (12b) Response:  Rejoice that our God is blessed! Contemplate his blessedness and marvel! Embrace, cherish, teach, and protect the word of God (the gospel) as a gift of grace that brings us into the very blessedness of God through faith in Christ. Cling to God’s instruction because your life depends on it! (6:13a; Psalm 1:1-2; 119:25; John 6:68; 2 Timothy 3:16-17) Main Idea: God’s Word (instruction) is the outflow of his blessedness. Those who embrace God’s Word in faith and obedience are brought into union with God through Christ and become partakers of God’s own blessedness (2 Peter 1:3-4). Questions for discussion: Is the blessedness of God a new concept? What is your reaction to this truth? What is the relationship between God’s blessedness and his Word (instruction, law, commands, etc.)? Do you typically view God’s Word as a burden you must obey or as an invitation and means to blessing?  Why does Paul so strongly exhort Timothy to not let go of God’s Word? What are the implications of this charge for church leaders today? In light of these passages, how will the church experience God’s blessedness today? Consider this statement: “We are only as happy or miserable as the god we serve.” What does the internal state of your heart and mind reveal about whom you are serving? Where are you currently looking for blessing? Are there idols you need to “flee" from? How can you pursue righteousness and godliness over the next few weeks? Read 2 Peter 1:3-4. How do we participate in the blessedness of God?  Set aside a block of time to consider the blessedness of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you behold this glorious reality and to lead you to “bless the Lord” afresh. Consider borrowing this prayer from John Owen: “May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has, by the riches of his grace, brought us from a state of enmity into this glorious fellowship with himself, give you such a taste of his sweetness and excellence in this communion as to be stirred up to a greater longing for that eternal enjoyment of him in eternal glory” (John Owen, Communion with God).
