Theme: The Glory of God Passage: John 17:1–5 The overarching theme of Jesus’ coming was the glory of God. What do we see (learn) about the glory of God here? God is reciprocally glorified by the actions of Father and Son. The Father is glorified by the Son completing His work. The Son is glorified by the Father completing His work through the Son. The Son glorified the Father by using His authority to sacrifice Himself. Why? To give eternal life to the ones the Father gave Him To enable the given ones to know the Father and Son This mutual glorification existed before the world began. Main Idea: Advent made the glory of God known through the person and work of Jesus Christ. We now are the primary displayers of God’s glory. Our mission is to know and make known God. Application Questions: How would you describe the glory of God? After listing out the statements in these verses about God’s glory, how would your description change? How does Jesus’ prayer present the way in which we see and experience God’s glory? What are some of the implications that emerge from the fact that this mutual glorification existed before the world began (v. 5)? Which takes precedent according to this passage, the glory of God or the giving of eternal life to those who believe? Why is this important? What does this passage indicate about your own purpose for life?
