Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 Main Idea: A maturing church serves together as one body using the many gifts that God has given it. Sermon Points: 4 Foundational Truths about Spiritual Gifts 1. The come in various types 2. They come as assigned and empowered by the Holy Spirit 3. They come to all of God’s people 4. They come for building up God’s church 2 Lies we are tempted to believe 1. I don’t belong (vs. 15-16) 2. I’m fine on my own (vs.21) Questions to Consider: Have you become a part of the body of Christ? Will you use your gifts to serve the body of Christ? Questions: I have a question about the message today and spiritual gifts. Q. What are they? Are they identical to talents and abilities? Are they complete new abilities that come when you’re saved and receive the Holy Spirit? Can they be a timely magnification of a natural talent? Or are they something else altogether? There are lots of gifts listed in 1 Cor 12 that Jason didn’t have time to explain. Can he explain them now? Does UBC believe that all these spiritual gifts are still active today or not? In 1 Corinthians 12:28, Paul says that ‘God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets.’ Does this mean God still appoints apostles and prophets to the church today? In vs 31, Paul says to desire the greater gifts. What are those? Can Christians have multiple spiritual gifts, and are those gifts permanent, or can the Holy Spirit give different gifts during different seasons or circumstances in a believer’s life?
