Sunday, June 7, 2026 Warning Against Idolatry 1 Corinthians 10:1-14 1. Common experience of God’s grace (1-5) a. The sufficiency of God’s provision (1-4) b. The reality of God’s displeasure (5) 2. Israel’s (negative) example (6-11) a. The people desired (“coveted”) evil (6) - They were idolaters (7, see Deuteronomy 32:1-10) - They indulged in sexual immorality (8, see Numbers 25:1-3) - They put Christ to the test (9, see Deuteronomy 6:16; Psalm 78:18; Hebrews 3:7-19) - They grumbled (10, see Exodus 16; Numbers 20) b. The people serve as a cautionary tale for our instruction (11) 3. Paul’s admonition (12) - “Take heed lest you fall” a. Guard against overconfidence that diminishes holiness and embraces evil b. Guard against scrupulous introspection that diminishes grace 4. Promise & Encouragement (13, see 1:4-9) - Everything rests on God’s faithfulness a. No temptation is too powerful (13a) - Do you believe this? b. God is faithful (13b) c. God provides a way out (13c) d. By God’s grace, we can endure every test of our faith (13d) 5. Application (14) - Flee from idolatry because your spiritual life depends on it Main Idea: Overconfidence leads to complacency, which leads to idolatry. The key to the Christian’s endurance is ultimately God’s faithfulness to us in Christ. As a loving Father he instructs, comforts, and admonishes us through His Word so we will endure until we are glorified with Christ. Questions for discussion and application: 1. In what ways are we prone to allow on our "knowledge" (biblical, doctrinal, theological, church tradition) to give a false sense of immunity against temptation? How can we enjoy spiritual blessings without becoming complacent (vv. 1-4)? 2. What is the warning for those who participate and experience God’s common grace (v. 5)? 3. Read Deuteronomy 32:1-10. What was at the heart of Israel’s idolatry? What are the modern "golden calves" we create—things that aren't inherently evil, but that we use to satisfy our desire for comfort, security, or control when God feels distant or slow to act?  4. Why do you think Paul places "grumbling" on the same level as sexual immorality and idolatry in this passage? What does chronic complaining reveal about our view of God's character and his sovereignty over our circumstances? 5. How does overconfidence make you more vulnerable to temptation? What does healthy, self-aware vigilance look like without turning into constant anxiety or legalism? Are you more prone to by hyper-vigilant or too lax? How can community help in both cases? 6. What is your honest reaction when you hear that there is no temptation that has overtaken you and that God is always faithful to provide a way out? How have you experienced God’s faithfulness to enable you to stand up under temptation?
